Biostimulation · Richmond Hill
Sculptra is not a filler. It does not add volume directly. It tells your skin to rebuild what time has taken, slowly, quietly, and in a way that holds up over years, not months.
Sculptra is an injectable biostimulator made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic material that has been used in dissolvable sutures for decades. When injected into the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue, PLLA particles trigger a controlled inflammatory response that gradually stimulates the production of new collagen.
The result is not immediate. There is no "before and after" photograph you can take the next day. What develops over the following weeks and months is a gradual thickening and firming of the skin. restored volume that looks like your face when it was younger, not like a face that has been filled.
This is the fundamental difference between Sculptra and hyaluronic acid fillers. HA fillers add volume directly by occupying space. Sculptra stimulates your body to generate new collagen, which then provides the volume. One approach gives you something. The other helps your skin rebuild something it once had.
"The best Sculptra outcomes are the ones nobody can identify. Someone will tell you that you look well-rested. You will say thank you and change the subject. That is the goal."
Sculptra works best for patients who are thinking about the medium to long term. If you are looking for an immediate, visible change, Sculptra is not the right starting point. If you are thinking about where your face will be in two or three years, Sculptra is worth serious consideration.
The ideal Sculptra patient has noticed a gradual hollowing of the cheeks, temples, or jawline over time. They may feel their skin is thinner than it used to be, or that their face looks tired even when they are not. They are not typically looking for dramatic transformation. they want to look like themselves, but with more structure and vitality than they currently have.
Sculptra is particularly well-suited to patients who:
Have experienced volume loss in the mid and lower face. The cheeks, temples, and jawline are the areas where collagen loss is most visible as we age. Sculptra addresses the structural deficit underneath rather than just filling the surface.
Want results that develop naturally. Because the collagen builds gradually over 8 to 12 weeks per session, the change is subtle enough that most people cannot pinpoint exactly what has changed. only that you look better.
Are willing to commit to a course of treatment. Most patients require two to three vials, typically administered across two to three sessions. This is not a single appointment and done.
Are not in their 20s. Sculptra is most appropriate for patients in their mid-30s and older, where actual collagen loss has occurred. In younger patients, the indication is different and should be discussed carefully.
When Sculptra is injected, the PLLA microparticles act as a scaffold. Your immune system recognises the particles as foreign material and initiates a repair response. Fibroblasts. the cells responsible for producing collagen. migrate to the area and begin laying down new collagen fibres around the particles. As the PLLA slowly breaks down and is absorbed, the collagen remains.
This process takes time. Most patients see the full effect of a session at around the 8 to 12 week mark. This is why follow-up appointments are spaced at least four to six weeks apart. injecting too early does not allow accurate assessment of what has already been built.
The longevity of Sculptra results is one of its most significant advantages. Clinical studies have demonstrated results lasting up to two years or more after a full course of treatment. This compares favorably to HA fillers, which typically last 9 to 18 months depending on the product and area treated.
We begin with a consultation. There is no treatment at the first appointment. We look at your face carefully. assessing where volume has been lost, what the underlying structure looks like, and whether Sculptra is the right approach for what you are trying to achieve. We may recommend a combination approach if your goals are better served by mixing biostimulation with other treatments.
If Sculptra is appropriate, we discuss a realistic treatment plan. typically two to three vials over two to three sessions, though this varies significantly by patient. We will give you an honest picture of what to expect and when, not a best-case scenario designed to get you to book.
On the day of treatment, the skin is cleansed and topical anaesthetic is applied. Sculptra is reconstituted with sterile water and a small amount of lidocaine for comfort. Injections are made with a fine needle or cannula depending on the area. The procedure takes 30 to 45 minutes. There is typically mild swelling, redness, and bruising for a few days. Firm massage of the treated areas for five minutes, five times a day, for five days is important. this helps distribute the product evenly and is a non-negotiable part of the protocol.
We follow up at four to six weeks to assess the response and plan the next session if needed. Once a full course is complete, most patients return for a maintenance vial every 12 to 18 months to sustain the result.
HA fillers act immediately. You can see the result the same day. For patients who want a specific shape change. lip augmentation, cheek projection, under-eye correction. HA fillers are often more appropriate. Sculptra does not give you shape; it gives you substance. For patients with diffuse volume loss across the face, Sculptra typically delivers a more natural result than using multiple syringes of HA filler to try to replace what has been lost structurally.
Hyperdilute Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) is the other major biostimulator we use at Skin Trek. Both stimulate collagen, but they work differently and have different physical properties. Sculptra tends to work better for deep structural volume in the face. Hyperdilute Radiesse works particularly well for skin quality improvements in the lower face, neck, and body. We often use both in combination as part of a comprehensive biostimulation protocol.
These are not competing treatments. they address different aspects of facial aging. Sculptra replaces lost volume by stimulating collagen in the tissue. Ultherapy lifts and tightens by heating the deep structural layer of the face (the SMAS) with focused ultrasound energy. Patients with both volume loss and skin laxity often benefit from both, sequenced appropriately.
Sculptra is priced per vial. Most patients require two to three vials for a meaningful result, which may be administered across multiple sessions.
Prices are before tax. 13% HST applies. A full treatment plan will be discussed at your consultation.
How many vials of Sculptra will I need?
This varies significantly by patient. A common starting point is roughly one vial per decade of age, but that is a rough guideline, not a prescription. Some patients do well with two vials. Others need four or more. We give you an honest number at consultation. It will not be the largest possible number.
When will I see results?
Sculptra works gradually. Most patients notice the first changes at four to six weeks after their first session, with the full effect of that session visible at around 8 to 12 weeks. Because results build over time, many patients find the improvement is most noticeable to others several months into treatment.
Does Sculptra look natural?
When done well and in appropriate candidates, yes. Because Sculptra works by stimulating your own collagen rather than adding a foreign material, the result tends to integrate seamlessly with your natural tissue. The gradual onset also helps. there is no sudden change that looks "done."
Is Sculptra reversible?
No. Unlike HA fillers, there is no reversal agent for Sculptra. The collagen your body produces is your own tissue. It cannot be removed. This is one reason we spend time at consultation making sure the plan is right before anything begins. It is also why we will occasionally tell you that you do not need as many vials as you think you do.
Can Sculptra be combined with other treatments?
Yes, and it often is. Sculptra is frequently combined with neurotoxins, HA fillers for specific areas, hyperdilute Radiesse, and Ultherapy as part of a comprehensive facial treatment plan. The sequencing and spacing of treatments matters. We discuss this carefully at your consultation.
Is Sculptra safe for Asian skin?
Yes. Sculptra's mechanism. stimulating collagen production via PLLA microparticles. is not melanin-dependent, meaning it does not carry the pigmentation risks associated with some energy-based treatments in darker skin types. It is used widely across East and Southeast Asian markets. At Skin Trek, we have extensive experience treating patients with East Asian facial anatomy and aesthetic priorities.
