Your own biology,
put to work.

Hair thinning is one of the most psychologically impactful changes people experience with aging — and one of the most undertreated, partly because many patients assume nothing non-surgical can make a meaningful difference. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is not a cure for hair loss, and it is worth being honest about that. But in the right patient, treated at the right stage, it can meaningfully slow progressive thinning and stimulate dormant follicles — without surgery, medication, or downtime.

At Skin Trek, PRP hair restoration is physician-administered. The same precision and clinical thinking we apply to facial injectable treatments applies here — including an honest assessment of whether PRP is the right approach for your specific pattern and stage of hair loss.

"PRP for hair is most effective as a maintenance strategy — slowing what is happening, reactivating what is dormant. Patients who start earlier, before significant follicle miniaturisation, tend to see the best results."

How PRP works for hair

PRP is prepared from your own blood. A small sample is drawn, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and the resulting platelet-rich plasma is injected directly into the scalp at the level of the hair follicles.

Platelets contain growth factors — including PDGF, VEGF, and IGF — that stimulate cell proliferation, increase blood supply to the follicle, and extend the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle. In areas of miniaturising follicles, this can slow the progression of thinning and, in some patients, stimulate visible regrowth in previously thinning areas.

The mechanism is biological rather than pharmaceutical — no drugs, no synthetic agents. The material being injected is entirely your own.

What to expect session by session

Day 1
Treatment session Blood drawn, centrifuged, PRP prepared. Topical anaesthetic applied to scalp. PRP injected across the treatment zone using a fine needle. Session takes 45–60 minutes. Mild redness and tenderness for 24–48 hours.
Mo 1–3
Initial response phase Growth factor activity begins. Most patients notice reduced shedding before they notice new growth. Some patients see no visible change at this stage — the process is happening at the follicle level.
Mo 3–6
Visible improvement New hair growth becomes visible in responsive patients. Hair density and calibre improvements are typically most noticeable at the 4 to 6 month mark after the initial course.
Mo 6+
Maintenance Most patients benefit from maintenance sessions every 6 to 12 months to sustain the response. Hair loss is progressive — PRP does not stop it permanently, but regular treatment can significantly slow the trajectory.

Who is a good candidate — and who is not

Good candidate

Early-to-moderate androgenetic alopecia

Male and female pattern hair loss in the early stages — thinning is visible but follicles are still present and partially active. This is where PRP has the strongest evidence base.

Good candidate

Diffuse thinning without complete loss

Patients with overall reduced density rather than bald patches. Follicles are miniaturised but not absent — PRP can stimulate activity where follicles remain.

Good candidate

Post-partum hair loss

Significant shedding after pregnancy (telogen effluvium) often resolves naturally, but PRP can accelerate recovery and support regrowth during the transition back to normal cycling.

Good candidate

Patients on minoxidil or finasteride

PRP works well in combination with pharmacological treatments. It is not a replacement for medication in patients who are responding well — it is an adjunct that may enhance and sustain the response.

Poor candidate

Complete follicle loss (scarring alopecia)

Where follicles have been permanently destroyed — by scarring alopecia, radiation, or advanced pattern loss with slick bald areas — PRP cannot regenerate follicles that no longer exist.

Poor candidate

Active scalp infection or inflammatory conditions

Psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or active infection in the treatment area need to be controlled before PRP is appropriate. Injecting into inflamed tissue is not safe or effective.

Realistic expectations — what the evidence shows

PRP for hair loss has a growing evidence base, but it is not uniformly positive. Response rates vary significantly between patients, and the mechanism is not fully understood. Here is an honest summary of what clinical studies generally show:

Reduced hair sheddingMost patients
Increased hair density~70% of patients in controlled studies
Visible new hair growth~50–60% of appropriate candidates
Non-responders~20–30%

Figures are approximate ranges from published literature. Individual results vary significantly. Response is strongly correlated with stage of hair loss at the time of treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Does PRP work for male pattern baldness?

It can, in the early to moderate stages. The key variable is whether active follicles are still present in the thinning areas. In areas of complete hair loss where follicles have been absent for years, PRP is unlikely to produce meaningful results. A consultation with scalp assessment is necessary to give you an honest picture of what is realistic.

How many sessions do I need?

Most patients start with a course of 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. After that, a maintenance session every 6 to 12 months is typical for patients who respond well. Some patients with more significant thinning benefit from a fourth session in the initial course.

Is PRP painful?

The scalp is sensitive, and multiple injections are involved. We apply topical anaesthetic before treatment to reduce discomfort significantly. Most patients tolerate it well — it is not as uncomfortable as it sounds. There is typically mild tenderness for 24 to 48 hours after the session.

Can I combine PRP with minoxidil or finasteride?

Yes — and this is often recommended. PRP and pharmacological treatments work through different mechanisms and are complementary. If you are already responding to minoxidil or finasteride, PRP may enhance and extend that response. We discuss existing treatments at consultation.

How soon will I see results?

Reduced shedding is often the first sign, typically within 4 to 8 weeks. Visible density improvement usually takes 3 to 6 months. Hair growth is a slow process — patience is required. Patients who abandon the protocol at 6 weeks because they cannot see results yet are leaving before the treatment has had time to work.
